Who is Josh Kesselman and What is Raw Papers?
Josh Kesselman of RAW Papers recalls the moment he fell in love with papers. He was 5 years old, walking round his native Manhattan along with his dad, who smoked cigarettes. The older man took a leaf of rice paper lit itand chucked it.
“That gorgeous bit of newspaper vanished,” says Kesselman, now 47 and also the creator of Raw, one of the hottest rolling paper brands in the U.S.”It was like watching an angel disappear.”
Kesselman was pursuing that magic his entire adult life. About 15 years ago, following a first career in retail which included a brief arrest, a motorcycle breakdown, and a religious awakening on a Canadian fishing trip, Kesselman took the opportunity in a Spanish factory to make”vegan” moving newspapers.
Why is Raw’s all-natural papers special is they are produced from minimally processed organic hemp fibers which don’t include chemical whiteners, such as the majority of other newspapers. Kesselman’s papers are light brown in colour and believed vegan since they do not contain dye (a dye is made out of lactose) and the gum line is a plant-based glue (some newspapers still utilize animal-based gum).
Raw was initially made for connoisseurs who wanted paper that would not change the flavor of whatever was being eaten –tobacco, lawful herbs, or bud. These days, the business has a broad but cult-like following, together with hip-hop star Wiz Khalifa even dedicating a song to the newest, aptly titled”Raw.”
“Everybody would like to smoke the best,” says Kesselman. “It’s like how people do not wish to eat Wonder Bread anymore–they would like to consume all-natural, historical grains”
Kesselman wouldn’t disclose Raw’s revenue, but based on Flowhub, which tracks purchases at legal cannabis dispensaries, the business has about 30 percent of the market in at least six countries, including California, Colorado, and Oregon. In 2nd position, with roughly 16 percent, is Zig-Zag, possessed by the public company Turning Point.
At Medication Person, one of Colorado’s oldest dispensaries, Sally Vander Veer, co-founder and president of this dispensary chain, states customers certainly prefer it. “Raw is our bestselling paper,” she states.
Arm-Long Joints, Cows, and Salmon He slept to make ends meet and fought with $500 to rent the storefront in Gainesville. The feds raided the shop and Kesselman. He placed under house arrest for a few months, charged with a felony for sale drug paraphernalia, and had been made to shut the company down.
Later this season, he moved to Arizona and–undeterred–chose to start over. He launched HBI, a smoke-shop distribution distribution company (though this time, he did not sell bongs). He awakened on rolling newspapers. Each week, From 1997, the company was clocking in accounts.
Around that time, he had been introduced to the proprietor of an old rolling paper mill in Spain’s Alcoy area, that was seeking an exclusive customer to helped create and promote new products. Kesselman signed on, and started manufacturing two new paper manufacturers : Juicy Jays, which were flavored papers, and Components, which resembled the corn newspapers his dad used.
Kesselman then decided to make a much larger bet, on vegan rolling newspapers. The transfer was a personal one for himbased on his own lifestyle. As he tells it in 1993, when he rode his motorcycle at Florida , he broke down alongside a cow pasture. He began talking into a baby cow, and the cows in jest and its mother starting mooing. That night in the office, Kesselman ordered a hamburger and blood pooled on the plate. He stopped eating beef. (He continued eating fish)
A month after, while on a fishing trip from Canada, he caught a coho salmon. Since he pulled it its red scales shimmered in the sun. “I could see God in that minute –ing bass,” he says. I will die today,'” he says.

At 2004, Kesselman searched for a provider who could promote him natural and unbleached fiber, which might be considered beef. Raw became the very first vegan rolling papers available on the market, nearly immediately winning a loyal following. For this very day, the new popularity owes a lot to Kesselman’s over-the-top character that is people.

“My mother had this Yiddish expression that interpreted to’shoemaker, stick to shoes,'” Kesselman remembers. “I’m the finest in the world when it comes to rolling newspapers. I know what my job would be and it is quite simple: supply you with the most effective rolling paper ever made.”
